036.Longing for Comfort in a Messy Mourning

How do you face true loss?

Where do you turn when you’re in the middle of messy mourning? People stand around you at a funeral trying to give their comfort, which is kind, but that never quite fills the gap that death leaves behind. So how can we find comfort that truly measures up?

Join me while we sit…

with Martha and Mary as they mourn the death of Lazarus. Even though their brother was raised to life that day and it’s likely our relative will not be… let’s see if we can still find the comfort that Jesus offered that day. Maybe we will find that it transcends that singular moment of long ago.

Now, this might get a little messy, so get yo’self girded in that armor and ready for some walkin’, cause we are headed right into the middle of some messy mourning. This is a funeral full of people who may not believe what you do. Many of them showed up to get their little religious box checked off for the week.

•Do the right thing.
•Bring a covered dish.
•Stand around and be awkward until it hurts.

And then Jesus arrives.

But He’s not there for any of those reasons. In fact, my Bible says He’s there to comfort. So let’s go on this journey looking for just what that looks like in the eyes of God. Because these sisters have waited quite a while… and comfort is certainly in order.
